US Government Seeks New Operator for ".us" - On June 13, the Department of Commerce, through the National Institute for Standards and Technology, issued a "Request for Quotations" soliciting bids to operate the ".us" Top-Level Domain. Unlike global domains such as ".com," ".us" is a uniquely American space, and in recent years, it has been the online home to a number of community-oriented groups like libraries, schools, and state and local governments. CDT believes that the ".us" rebid raises a number of important questions, particularly regarding the public interest in equitable ".us" administration. The rebid process will move quickly; applications are due to NIST by July 27. June 13, 2001
